- NOTES (last updated by RAB 08-May-93):
-
- General: Most of the headings in the above table are probably self evident except for the following:
-
- Version/Yr: This refers (in most instances) to the most recent version and year of release; where it is known that
- specific RISC-OS 3 versions have been released, this is noted under 'Other Comments'.
-
- RISC-OS 'compatibility' was covered by Adrian Look's article in Archive 4.3 p11 which explained the main categories as:
- "RISC-OS Compliant - applications which run in the Desktop and closely follow the RISC-OS guidelines.
- RISC-OS Compatible - applications which can be loaded from the Desktop and have a quit option which returns
- the user to the Desktop with no change to the computer.
- RISC-OS Coexistant - applications which will run in a machine fitted with RISC-OS but which fit neither of the
- above categories." (Any un-saved work from other active applications should first be saved since, whilst a
- RISC-OS coexistant program can be launched from the Desktop, typically to exit such a program requires that
- that the <Ctrl><Break> or <Ctrl><Reset> keys be pressed.)
-
- Other Archimedes: Information has been provided by other Archive readers as to whether specific programs will or will
- not run under RISC-OS 3.10; where relevant, additional comments are also included.
-
- ARM3: All of these games run too fast on a computer fitted with ARM3. This can be turned off by typing:
- %H2% Cache Off%H2%
- at the command line (accessed by pressing Function key F12); before starting the game. Alternatively, the
- game's !Run file can be appropriately modified - for an example see the !Run file for 'Lander' contained on
- the RISC-OS 3 Application disc.
-
- Hard disc installation: Whilst many applications/programs can be freely installed on to a hard disc, copy protection is
- incorporated into a number of them. In some instances this means that they cannot be installed on to a hard
- disc at all. Where such installation is possible, protection may take two forms:
- 'Active' protection means that some action is required by the user to start the application/program. This
- covers such things as requiring the insertion of the original program disc as a "key disc", or reference to
- the original documentation to input a "colour chart" code reference or "password" consisting of a specific
- word or phrase.
- 'Passive' protection means that no such specific action is required to start the application/program. This
- covers such things as a hardware "dongle" (permanently fitted to the computer) or a unique "registration"
- number and/or name which is registered with the software publishers - this may also be "hard coded" into the
- program itself. Only registered owners are then entitled to support and/or upgrades from the software house
- concerned.
-
- A1: Whilst these adventure games created using Alpine Software's ALPS are essentially RISC-OS compatible, they do not revert to
- the default system font. Contained in the ALPS 'Resources' directory is a file called 'defaultchr'; this should first be
- copied into the game's own 'Resources' directory. The game's !Run file should then have the following line added at the end
- (ie. after the command to: Run <AlpsGame$Dir>.!RunImage):
- %H2%Print <AlpsGame$Dir>.Resources.defaultchr
- (NB. This hint was provided by Philip Hawthorne of Alpine Software.)
-
- A2: Whilst Alpine Software's adventure game element of 'Cyborg' is essentially RISC-OS compatible, it reverts to mode 15 rather
- than the default Desktop mode. To overcome this the following changes are required - in !Adventure.StartUp add a new line
- 65:
- %H2%OSCLI("SetEval WimpMode "+STR$(MODE))
- and in !Adventure.!RunImage delete (or REM out) line 90 and add a new line 115:
- %H2% WimpMode = FNRead_OSnumericvar("WimpMode")
- (NB. This hint was provided by Philip Hawthorne of Alpine Software)
- 'Cyborg' cannot be compressed using David Pilling's 'SparkFS' since it already uses its own version of Computer Concept's
- 'CfsReader'.
-
- A3: Atomwide's 'VIDCplus' software is used on my Acorn A5000 to provide Desktop mode 102 (and with the Taxan 795 monitor
- MonitorType MUST be set to 4 and Sync to 0). Since certain applications/games will not run with 'VIDCplus' loaded, I have
- created two Desktop !Boot files - one of which doesn't load 'VIDCplus' - and the appropriate one is re-named to !Boot when
- required.
-
- F1: These older games from The Fourth Dimension re-configure the System Sprites and produce an error message of "No memory in
- system sprite area", when run on my Acorn A5000 using a Desktop !Boot file. Rather than attempting to modify the !Run file
- for each game, I have found that the easiest approach is to type:
- %H2% Configure NoBoot
- at the command line (accessed by pressing Function key F12) and then press <Ctrl><Break>; before starting the game(s).
-
- F2: The Fourth Dimension's game 'Cataclysm' provides a means of returning to the Desktop. However, depending on computer
- configuration, this should be avoided since it appears to delete all non-standard filing systems (eg. SCSI hard disc and
- 'Compression' drive icons).
-
- F3: The Fourth Dimension's game 'Grievous Bodily 'ARM' has been reported to me as requiring the Desktop mode to be set to 15 in
- order to get it running.
-
- F4: The Fourth Dimension's game 'Pandora's Box' appears to be incompatible with Acorn Computer's MIDI software (version 3.14).
- I have found that the easiest approach is to type:
- %H2% RMKill MIDI
- at the command line (accessed by pressing Function key F12); before starting the game. Alternatively the game's !Run file
- could be amended as appropriate.
-
- F5: The Fourth Dimension's game 'Saloon Cars Deluxe' can be made to work with the Taxan 795 monitor by using the 'SalCars13'
- mode module contained on the ARCHIVE monthly disc (vol.6 no.1). The MonitorType must be set to 1 and no other module modules
- (eg. from 'VIDCplus') should be loaded first. See also the review by Martin Thorpe in ARCHIVE vol.6 no.4.
- (NB. 'Saloon Cars Deluxe' is incompatible with 'SparkFS' (but OK with 'Compression') - see note P1.)
- (HELP! - 'Saloon Cars Deluxe' has been reported to me as not working with with an A3010/ARM250/RISC-OS 3.1/2Mb and TV - in
- spite of varying attempts at *Configure NoBoot, Drive 0 and mode 15 - any further suggestions would be appreciated.)
-
- G1: Although Gem Electronics' 'Desktop Games' is not RISC-OS 2 (let alone RISC-OS 3) compatible, a facility was provided with
- the RISC-OS 2 'Support Disc' to install the "hidden" game of 'Wimpy Invaders'.
-
- G2: Although Gem Electronics' game 'Word Up Word Down' can be run under RISC-OS 3 as noted above, it will probably also be
- necessary to modify the Basic program WordCode and amend spurious references to CHANNELVOICE.
-
- M1: Magnetic Scrolls adventure games 'Corruption' and 'Jinxter' will ONLY work with the supplied very old version (1.01) of the
- Shared C Library. The games' !Run files should be modified to first include a line:
- %H2%RMKill SharedCLibrary
- This deletes the RISC-OS 3 version, before loading the games' own versions of the Shared C Library; two further lines should
- be added at the end of the !Run files:
- %H2% RMKill SharedCLibrary
- %H2% RMLoad SharedCLibrary
- These delete the 'old' and re-instate the RISC-OS 3 versions of the Shared C Library. (NB. It may also be advisable to first
- close down any other active applications that may be using the RISC-OS 3 Shared C Library before running these games.)
-
- M2: Earlier versions of Magnetic Scrolls' adventure game 'Wonderland' could not be successfully installed on to a SCSI hard
- disc. The hard disc installation program itself uses mode 16 which provides a corrupted screen display with my Taxan 795
- monitor.
-
- M3: Minerva Software's game 'Freddy's Folly' contains a !Run file (in Basic) which includes an automatic auto-configuration of
- the computer's memory as well as setting up a number of initial program parameters. The various auto-configuration elements
- should be deleted from this file. A further complication is that the disc is copy protected, but it should be possible to
- rename the original !Run file (to say OLD!Run) and re-save a new !Run file containing only the initial program parameters.
-
- M4: Minerva Software's game 'Orion' appears to be incompatible with Acorn Computer's MIDI software (version 3.14). I have found
- that the easiest approach is to type:
- %H2% RMKill MIDI
- at the command line (accessed by pressing Function key F12) as well as the other commands noted; before starting the game.
- Alternatively the game's !Run file could be amended as appropriate.
-
- O1: The '!Genesis' program (part of Oak Solutions 'Genesis II' application) produces varying error messages if there are more
- than 16 fonts in any one font directory. (NB. This hint was provided by Tony Holdstock of Oak Solutions.)
-
- P1: David Pilling's 'SparkFS' software is used on my Acorn A5000 to compress virtually all files contained on the internal IDE
- and external SCSI hard discs using the 'Spark dir' option (Generally I find it easier to use than 'Compression'. However,
- certain games (notably several of The Fourth Dimension's copy protected ones) will not run after having been compressed
- using 'SparkFS' an error box appears stating that "File is packed with a bad number of bits", "SparkFS memory corrupted" or
- even a totally blank screen. However, they nearly all appear to run after being compressed using 'Compression'!
-
- P2: David Pilling's 'SparkFS' uses, by default, the system sprite area; if certain games also make use of this a clash is
- inevitable. However, the !Run file for 'SparkFS' provides an alternative means for running such games which should be
- un-commented and the default command commented out. The modified !Run file extract should thus reflect the following:
- %H2%| SetEval SparkFSMemory -1%H2%
- %H2%SetEval SparkFSMemory &40000%H2%
- (NB. This hint was provided by David Pilling.)
-
- P3: Ian Palmer's 'Word Hound' initially produced a "disc full" error message, when attempting installation within a 'SparkFS'
- directory; this appears to be because one of the dictionary files is 1.9Mb and is apparently spread over 3 discs (and the
- whole application requires 3.5Mb of hard disc space). Thanks to hints from David Pilling, I found the following worked:
- 1) Ensure that there is sufficient hard disc space (between 7 and 10Mb are probably required since, just before the
- files are compressed, there will be the original file, a temporary copy and the compressed version).
- 2) Ensure that as much RAM as possible is made available (eg. *Configure NoBoot - to save installing unnecessary
- applications - and set the Task Manager's "Next" slot to the maximum - with the "Free" slot set to nil).
- 3) It may be necessary to increase the 'SparkFS' Memory allocation from the "Choices" menu; I left it at 2048K.
- 4) Install 'Word Hound' on the hard disc - as a normal (non-compressed) application.
- 5) If not using an existing one, create a new 'SparkFS' archive directory.
- 6) Copy the non-compressed 'Word Hound' application into the relevant archive directory.
- 7) Check that the compressed version of 'Word Hound' appears to function properly and delete the non-compressed
- version.
- It may be possible to merge stages 6 and 7 by moving (instead of copying) the 'Word Hound' application; my approach was more
- cautious but would save time in re-installing 'Word Hound' if something were to go wrong!
-
- Q1: Both versions of 'Quazer' insist that the Screen memory is set to exactly 160K. The Fourth Dimension/Impact Software version
- uses the 'MemAlloc' module to achieve this, but this doesn't work if the Screen memory is already above 160K. I have found
- that the easiest solution is to first change the Desktop mode to 15 from the 'Palette' Desktop icon.
-
- R1: The 'Droom' adventure game from Resource can cause problems if run from a SCSI hard disc and/or using a Desktop !Boot file.
- Its !Run file should be modified as follows. Firstly, to avoid deleting the SCSI filing modules, the "RMClear" command
- should be deleted. Secondly the 'memspace' module should not be used as this attempts to re-allocate SystemSize to 8K,
- RMASize to 80K, SpriteSize to 400K, and ScreenSize, FontSize & RAMSize all to 0K. Memory permitting, all that is required is
- to include appropriate lines in the !Run file to utilise either the original 'MemAlloc' module or the 'ChangeDynamicArea'
- command. If using a Desktop !Boot file, the setting of System sprites should be some 400K greater than that revealed by the
- Task display. (eg. The Desktop !Boot file on my A5000 starts with System sprites set to 32K, but an examination of the Task
- display shows 160K used; I then calculated that 'Droom' probably required System sprites to be set to (400 + 160 - 32) -
- this has to be rounded to the nearest 32k - ie. 544K.)
-
- R2: As supplied, the 'Rise In Crime' adventure game from Robico Software will only work from a floppy disc in Drive 0. However,
- it is possible to install the program on a hard disc by making extensive changes to both the !boot and PROGRAMS.run files to
- remove the specific references to Drive 0 and replace these with an appropriate Drive 4 directory pathname or (better still)
- the <Obey$Dir> prefix. In any event the !boot file (in Basic) includes an automatic auto-configuration of the computer's
- memory as well as setting up a number of initial program parameters. These various auto-configuration elements should be
- deleted from this file. (NB. The hints/line numbers were provided some time ago by Chris Barrington-Brown of Cunning
- Running Software, this contact being recommended by Mike O'Leary of Robico Software.)
- (NNB. 'Rise In Crime' is incompatible with 'SparkFS' (but OK with 'Compression') - see note P1.)
-
- T1: The two 'The Art Machine' packs from Topologika consist of a total of 10 different programs. Several of these utilise the
- original 'MemAlloc' module to re-allocate varying memory allocations for: FontSize, RAMFSSize, RMAFree, RMASize, ScreenSize,
- SpriteSize & SystemSize. Memory permitting, these commands may either be omitted from the !Run file(s) and/or the newer
- 'ChangeDynamicArea' command included instead. Some of these programs are RISC-OS compatible, but of these 'Patterned Tiles'
- reverts to mode 15 rather than the default Desktop mode.
-
- Z1. All of these games were originally produced for the original pre RISC-OS 2 operating system and include !Boot and/or other
- files which provide an automatic auto-configuration of the computer's memory. Wherever possible, with RISC-OS 3, such
- files should be by-passed and the !Run file modified (or even created) to include either the original 'MemAlloc' module or
- the 'ChangeDynamicArea' command to re-allocate memory as appropriate.
-
- Z2. All of these games assume that the default disc drive is 0. For users with a Hard Disc this can easily be set by typing:
- %H2% Drive 0%H2%
- at the command line (accessed by pressing Function key F12); before starting the game. Alternatively, the game's !Run file
- can be appropriately amended (or even created) by including the <Obey$Dir> command.
-
- Z3. All of these games produce corrupted and/or blank screen displays when used with my Acorn A5000/Taxan 795 combination. An
- easy solution I have found is to change the Desktop mode to one of the standard/'TV' modes (eg. mode 15) - accessed from the
- 'Palette' Desktop icon; attempting to change the mode from within the game's !Run file does not appear to work.
-
